At a baptism the godparents traditionally give the ceremony candle and one piece meant to last — a rosary, a medal or a keepsake box. Other guests give something practical for the parents, between €20 and €50.
This question reaches us every week, almost always in the same week as the baptism. The short answer is above; the concrete numbers are below, because that is usually what is missing.
What falls to the godparents
In Portugal the godparents provide the ceremony candle — it is the piece the priest asks for during the rite. Tradition says it should be white and kept afterwards; many families light it again on the first birthday and at First Communion.
- Ceremony candle engraved with name and date — €25 to €40
- Rosary, medal or cot cross — €30 to €60
- A complete basket combining both — €70 to €120
What everyone else gives
Here the usual amount sits between €20 and €50, and the rule that works is simple: either it lasts forever, or it gets used up in the first six months. What tends to fail is the middle ground — the plastic toy, the generic frame, the wrong-size clothes.
How far in advance to order
Personalised pieces take 2 to 4 working days to make plus 1 to 2 to deliver. Ordering 10 days ahead leaves room to approve the preview without rushing. Under 5 days, write to us before ordering and we confirm whether we can make it.
